This was a move I was determined to make ever since I was in junior high school. We had gone on a family vacation to Southern California, and it was amazing. I instantly fell in love and wanted to be there when I got older. Naturally, once graduated from college and when an opportunity presented itself, I jumped on the chance to go. I took road trip to get there from Maine.
I highly recommend road trips to anyone with an adventurous heart. There is so much to see in the US and it's so beautiful. Nature is absolutely stunning and so diverse even just from one side of the US to the other. Even in California there are so many different wonders within the countryside. More to come on the road trip later! For now, here is all you need to know about making one of those massive moving decisions.
I was lucky and moved there with one of my best friends in the entire world. He is also my biggest crush. We were on the adventure of a lifetime. Young, bright, bushy-tailed recent grads with the future looking bright. We ended up in Orange County, CA. For those who are not as familiar, this is an area of California between LA and San Diego. It was not where we were originally planning to land but we didn't complain. We both got jobs after we got there and were starting to make a career in the place we both had dreamed of since we were little. We were in most peoples eyes "crazy" for leaving everything behind without having jobs, but I have no regrets.
Leaving family and friends behind is hard but I urge everyone with the desire, to go because time will continue to move forward and while you're young it's the best time to take the risks. Needless to say, if you are any age it's never to let to make the leap to go somewhere new. We happened to be in our 20's and were willing to fail because we could always go back home. Home was always an option, so why not take the risk?
We did have a couple thousand in savings to be able to get established prior to getting jobs. Where we were spontaneous we also did our best to plan out the how. How are we going to be able to make it work? Our biggest obstacle was money and by having a small amount saved up we were setting ourselves up for a smoother transition. The goal was to get a job within the first 3 months and then we would have made it. We got lucky and I got a position within our first month there and thus we got an apartment to establish ourselves.
I look back at this life moment and smile with how determined we were to make it work. There were a lot of tiring moments, more applicants sent out than I could even count, more networking events than I've ever attended in my life, and yet we succeeded. There we were in California living in the sunshine state for 5 years. Going on hikes, making friends, working on building our careers, and always exploring.
To recap, here are the top things to think about when making a move.
I encourage those who are looking to take the jump to move whether that's to a different town, state, or country. There is so much self-growth and incredible amounts of cultural lessons to be learned. If you do it, you'll never look back wondering what if, you'll always smile and say "I did it."
